8 Steps to Scheduling Success–Step 4: Set the Dependencies

So what’s all the fuss about dependencies, anyway? I mean, it’s a nice way to tie tasks together but it’s also a lot of work! Besides, I can just enter the start date to get tasks to start where I want them to and there’s nothing wrong with that, right? WRONG!!!!!
If you are entering start dates for most tasks you may as well go back to using Excel to manage your schedules. Believe me, I do not want to encourage to do that but let’s face it, if you’re entering too many of those dates then you aren’t letting Microsoft Project do its job. Our schedules need to be dynamic and that can only happen when we have captured ALL of the necessary dependencies.
So how do I know if I have “enough” dependencies in my schedule? I’m glad you asked. EVERY detail task and milestone in your schedule must have a dependency on its finish date. Most tasks should also have dependencies on their start dates, but there will be exceptions to that when you have to schedule tasks to start no earlier than a specific date. (but please ...

Question Hi, I'm in the process of configuring my new EPM2010 dev environment, to gain some familiarity prior to implementing a live build. I see how the Department hierarchy can be used to make enteprise custom fields and also cube builds specific to an organisation (my EPM serves multiple organisations in the local area). I see a set of 'Sample' enterprise custom fields pre-defined in the system, may I please ask if these Sample custom fields are all required in the system, and should I simply rename them all by removing the work "Sample" from their names? Thanks, Alan. Answer Hi Alan, All of the “sample” enterprise custom fields are related to the sample workflow that comes out of the box. Changing them may “break” the sample workflow and should not be done unless you are CERTAIN you will never want to use/demo the sample workflow. Happy Scheduling! -Cindy

If you haven’t had the chance to read those posts, follow the links and check them out before reading on. In Step 1, I mentioned Task Types and suggested you set the appropriate task type before entering any tasks into your schedule but I didn’t tell you how to choose the appropriate task type. (I had to leave something to cover in Step 3) If you will be estimating in Work, set the task type to Fixed Work. If you will be estimating in Duration, set the Task Type to Fixed Duration with Effort Driven unchecked. If you have already entered all your tasks and want to apply this change to everything, click on any column heading to highlight every task and then select Information from the Task Ribbon.
