Creating a server connection with Project Professional 2007

  • Launch Project Professional
  • Navigate –> Tools –> Enterprise Options –> Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts (see below).

  • In the Account Properties dialog box, we need to specify the following:
    • Account Name – Name for references purposes, can be anything you find descriptive.
    • Project Server URL – This will be provided to you by your Project Server administrator.
    • Select the Use Windows user account radio button.
    • Optionally select the Set as default account checkbox.
    • Click OK when finished.

  • Lastly, consider the following settings:
    • highlight the connection most frequently used in the available accounts section, and click the Set as Default button
  • When starting setting
    • If you will always be using Project Professional connected to the Enterprise, select the Automatically detect connection state radio button.
    • If you anticipate the need to work in a disconnected state occasionally, select the Manually control connection state radio button.
  • Click OK when finished.
  • Exit Project Professional.

  • Launch Project Professional.
  • If you selected the Manually control connection state setting previously, you will be prompted with the login dialog box below.
    • Select which server you would like to connect to, or Work Offline, then click the OK button.

Hi Dan, yes, I did big searching :-) but without answer. I think that client certificate is not allowed method for user authentication / login. Thanks for your answer, Michal

    Michal,
Unfortunately this is a scenario I have not yet implemented myself. I did just a little searching (as I am sure you did) online. Although there were a few hits I didn't find anything very useful. The one link below was somewhat interesting however. If I find anything else useful I'll pass it on. Let me know when you are successful.

Server certificate under IIS (allow https trafic) and client certificate to allow log on without need to enter user login and password - for authenticating is used user certificate.

So I understand correctly, the certificate is installed on the client, not the server under IIS?

I have no problem with ssl connection - yes it works great, but I have problem with connection to the Project Server 2007 via proxy, which needs authenticate by personal certificate. For me it works only for PWA but not for Project Pro. When opening PWA site, I am prompted for user certificate, click OK and I am logged in to the PWA site. When trying to connect via Project Pro, and check “Use Windows account”, the certificate promp is displayed (like in PWA site), click OK, then certificate prompt is displayed again, click OK, then again and again (four times). Then the message window

“Project was not able to connect to Project Server because of the following error:
Project Server could not be contacted.
If you retry and still unable to connect, try the following:
    - Check your network connection and see if you are able to connect to other websites
    - Check the URL of Project Server you are trying to connect
    - Use Internet Explorer and make sure you can connect to Project Web Access
    - Contact your server administrator for futher assistance

When I check forms auth. it is the same behaviour. You can simulate this error window, when type wrong server name in Project Server url box (Account Properities).

    Thanks
    Michal

For those who were wondering, yes, SSL can be utilized for the connection as well. I recently set up an extranet in this manner, where remote users can connect via Project Profession over the WAN via SSL connection.

Is it possible to connect to server using SSL and client certificate? For me it does not work.
